Reaching New Heights: Our Walk to Easedale Tarn

Our latest walking adventure took a small, determined group of Has2Bhappy service users to one of the Lake District’s hidden gems—Easedale Tarn, just outside the village of Grasmere. It was a full day of fresh air, spectacular scenery, and a real sense of achievement.

A Walk Through History and Beauty

Easedale Tarn is a glacial tarn nestled in a quiet valley above Grasmere. Surrounded by rugged fells and accessible via a well-trodden path, it has long been a favourite among walkers of all abilities. Once popular with Victorian visitors who would ride ponies or be carried up in sedan chairs, the route now offers a peaceful escape into the heart of the Lakes, rich with history and natural beauty.

The walk to the tarn is around 5.5 miles (9km) round trip, and while not mountainous, it does include some steady uphill stretches that made this trip a little more challenging than our usual walks. But our group rose to the occasion with energy and determination.

Jet Buzzes and Big Views

As we climbed the gently winding path alongside Sourmilk Gill waterfall, the reward at the top was nothing short of breathtaking. The views over the tarn, cradled in its quiet basin, were simply stunning—glistening water, craggy peaks, and total tranquillity.

Adding a bit of unexpected excitement to the day, we were buzzed more than once by low-flying fighter jets training in the area. The roar overhead was dramatic and thrilling, giving us all a reminder of how unique the Lake District skies can be!

Tired Legs, Happy Hearts

After a well-earned rest and some snacks by the tarn, we made our way back down feeling proud and connected—not just to nature, but to each other. The return journey may have been a little slower, with tired legs and the occasional giggle over wobbly knees, but the smiles said it all.

Everyone finished the walk with a real sense of achievement, and more than a few said it was their favourite walk yet.
